SharePoint Could Do Better - CMSWiRE
By David Roe

While there has been some debate over SharePoint's merits or demerits — and we’ve covered a lot of it here  - there’s no getting away from it, especially with the general release of SharePoint 2013 on the way.

However, according to a report just released by SmartLogic, written by founder and CEO Jeremy Bentley, while SharePoint is fast becoming the information gateway in the enterprise in both the US and Europe, even in the new version it still has some major functional gaps. In fact, he says, according to Gartner, mass-tagging of content and ingestion of existing content and the management of taxonomies and structures are some of these gaps.

Meeting the Demand for High-Res and High-Speed – At the Same Time

JPEG Wizard So you’ve gone ahead and started designing your new standards-compliant web site. You’ll craft it with care, because you want your site visitors to understand your passion for design.

Ideally, you’ll create a “responsive design” so your site can be experienced the same from any device and any browser. But even as new standards come into focus and practices like responsive and adaptive design mature, ever-changing variables of network availability, bandwidth, target display resolution and mobile camera pixel density conspire to impede the performance of even the most standards-compliant, responsive, adaptive, magnificently crafted site.

One thing to keep in mind is that the influx of hot new devices like Retina Display iPhones and iPads have changed the game. On a device with greater pixel density, images loaded from a website must be correspondingly larger. That forces you to try to squeeze far larger image files through a possibly throttled mobile connection and still achieve a display speed that's acceptable.

Study: One-quarter of U.S. patents issued this year will be in mobile - InfoWorld
By Stephen Lawson

The land rush for mobile patents is so feverish that about one-quarter of all patents issued in the U.S. this year will be mobile-related, according to a study released on Wednesday. "It just shows, given the number of filings, how competitive that space has become," said Chetan Sharma, founder and president of Chetan Sharma Consulting. He studied statistics about patent applications and grants in Europe and the U.S. over the past 20 years.

How to regulate cloud computing? - The Guardian
By Mark O'Conor, Patrick van Eecke & Jessica Turner

Regulatory issues around data protection and security can be addressed to realise the potential of cloud computing. Who can fail to have noticed the emergence of cloud as the current technology buzzword? Recent commentary has explained how the cloud can transform business and yet sceptics have been falling over themselves to highlight the barriers to its realisation. However, cloud computing entails many of the same considerations and controls as outsourcing to an offshore vendor and, as such, the issues can be addressed and the advantages of cloud computing realised.

Google starts using HTML5 and WebM for premium content - Gigaom
By Janko Roettgers

Google has quietly started to switch some aspects of its premium content offerings to its open source WebM video format. Google’s WebM product manager John Luther explained during a developer Hangout Wednesday that YouTube and Google Play video rentals are now using WebM as opposed to Flash on Samsung’s Chromebooks. “We will be rolling that out on more Chrome OS devices and other platforms soon,” he added.
Luther went on to explain that Google did a lot of work on the security layer that delivers the videos encrypted to an HTML5 player. “As far as I know, we are the first to ever do that,” he said.

It’s been five years since the announcement of HTML5 and yet the HTML5 vs. Flash debate continues to rage on among developers. Checkout the HTML5 vs Flash [Infographic].

Mobile Technology and the Radiology Practice: Implementation Strategy - ImagingBiz
By Cat Vasko

The use of mobile technologies holds a great deal of potential for radiology practices, Degati says. “Radiologists are enabled to make decisions in a more timely way than ever before: They do not have to be tied to desks or workstations, and they have the flexibility to work whenever and wherever they want, instead of being restricted to traditional hours of operation,” said Joe Degati, CTO for Medical Management Professionals (MMP). He adds, however, that an implementation strategy is necessary not only to make the best use of capital, but to avoid running afoul of privacy regulations.

Now mobile apps can facilitate rapid collaboration among physicians and the viewing of Electronic Health Records (EHR) by patients. To meet the demands of tomorrow's medical applications try out the AIMTools SDK.

How the Cloud is Impacting SharePoint 2013 - CMSWire
By Christian Buckley

The cloud is the evolution of software and collaboration — it’s something companies need to be thinking about, or they will get left behind. Within Microsoft's ecosystem, what is driving much of this dramatic shift toward the cloud is Microsoft itself, rather than their customer base. With competitors like Google driving a new breed of products and services geared toward the cloud and away from the traditional operating system model, Microsoft has scrambled in the past few years to outline their own cloud strategy — whether or not their vast customer base is ready for it.

One of the most cost-effective ways to drive productivity improvement initiatives is to increase collaboration across the enterprise, both internally among employees as well as between employees, partners, and customers, through the use of a standardized set of tools. A Look Back at PMA@CES 2013

PMA_CESIt was another great year at PMA@CES in the LVH (formerly Las Vegas Hilton). The number of products being showcased at CES is amazing. There were over 20,000 new products unveiled at the 2013 CES including our ThinPic app, which helps users to store 3x the hi-res photos on their iOS device. Mobile was again one of the hottest topics at the show.

“Overall, the future is wrapped around mobile with Android sub-planting the iPhone platform in the near future,” said Al Jackson, Senior Global Business Development Manager at Accusoft.  “In addition to the massive interest for new mobile apps, attendees were very interested in solutions for better image compression.”

“The proliferation of image data and increased sharing of content inherent to Enterprise 2.0 is increasing the need for efficient methods of compression and decompression of images,” said Brandon Mount, Manager, Sales Engineering at Accusoft. “One of our core strengths is high-speed compression technology and this creates a lot of great opportunities for us at a show like CES,” said Jackson.
